Falling for Old Finds

Sometimes we fall for our new finds hard enough that the old pieces we once loved fall out of rotation. I'm a guilty offender of this and I've made a pact with myself to use not only the ten percent of the closet I just acquired but also the tried and true articles of clothing I once loved. Some of my clothes haven't seen the light of day in what I'm embarrassed to admit might be years. Of course, I know I'm not alone when I say I fall victim to the fast fashion trends of the retail industry. This season I was able to pair some old pieces with a new find from Brandy Melville.

I was killing some time at the mall with my boyfriend when I decided to check out PacSun. I've recently become more fond of their selections surprisingly; with Brandy being my go to within the store. I'm aware they've had tons of controversy over the years for their "One Size Fits All" sizing but as a petite shopper, I find their sweaters luxuriously soft and appropriate for my stature. I picked up this mixed yarn knitted sweater after falling in love with the simple round neckline and cozy fit. Sometime simple is best. With the drop in temperature, sweater weather is more than appropriate so I brought the sweater home without a second thought.

November has been a rough month in terms of my immune system keeping illness at bay. After struggling with a reoccurring fever, I deemed it wise to layer up for an upcoming Day Wave concert at Baby's All Right in Brooklyn. I was set on wearing this sweater but was at a loss for what to pair it with. That's when I remembered my pact. I filed through my closet until I found my old pinstriped button-down from H&M. This baby hadn't seen the light of day in quite some years. I decided to pair the look with some distressed black denim, black heeled boots and my fall essential of the season: a black bomber jacket. It was a great decision as the temperature dropped late into the night after the show.

Weeks went on and it seemed as though the universe was pushing me to incorporate more old but good pieces back into rotation. A navy wool coat from Gap was sitting in my mother's closet for who knows how long. She lent it to me and I fell in love with the silhouette of the sleeves. The bell sleeve has become very popular again and I felt as though this jacket played a small homage to this trend. I paired the coat with similar pieces for a classic look. This time the combination of pieces was less distressed and more polished with some sunnies to keep the glare of the sun away. I was ready to explore the downtown area of a neighboring town and combat the chilly fall air. This combination is perfect for the holiday season with Thanksgiving dinners and shopping for some great Black Friday deals coming up, too!

On that note, I've become more inspired to incorporate pieces that have been begging for a little more love as the season continues. Have you been neglecting any pieces in your wardrobe? Maybe it's time to bring them back out and style them differently. Sometimes you don't need to fill your closet with new items but breathe fresh life into the old ones. With the nature of fast fashion, it's easy to cycle through trends and forget old classics. This pact challenges me to become more creative instead of reaching for the same few articles of clothing through the month. Are you up for the challenge? Let me know in the comments below.
Until next time,

Christine Celine
